You need a crown. Maybe a tooth is chipped. Maybe a filling is too large. Or maybe you just finished a root canal. Then your dentist gives you a choice: traditional or same-day dental crowns. If you’re like most people, your first question is: what’s the difference? And which one is right for me?
Let’s break it down in plain language, no dental jargon required.

The Traditional Crown: A Tried-and-True Process
Traditional crowns have been around for decades. They work. They’re reliable. But they take time.
At your first appointment, your dentist numbs the tooth and shapes it down to make room for the crown. Then they take an impression, either with a squishy material or a digital scan. That impression goes to a dental lab. You leave with a temporary crown made of plastic or metal. It protects the tooth while you wait.
Two to three weeks later, you come back. The lab has crafted your permanent crown from porcelain, ceramic, or metal. Your dentist removes the temporary, checks the fit and color, and cements the new crown in place.
Total visits: two. Total time from start to finish: about three weeks.
The Same-Day Crown: One Visit, Done
Same-day crowns use technology called CEREC, which stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Fancy name. Simple idea.
At your first appointment, your only appointment, your dentist shapes the tooth just like with a traditional crown. But instead of taking a physical impression, they use a special camera to capture a 3D digital image of your tooth. That image goes into a computer right here in the office.
While you relax in the chair, the computer designs your custom crown. Then a milling machine inside our office carves the crown from a solid block of ceramic material. In about 15 to 30 minutes, your crown is ready. Your dentist bonds it in place, checks your bite, and you’re done.
Total visits: one. Total time from start to finish: about two hours.
Which One Is Better?
It depends on your situation.
Same-day crowns are great for:
- Busy people who can’t take two days off work
- Patients who don’t want to deal with a temporary crown (they can fall off or feel awkward)
- Front teeth where aesthetics matter most, since the ceramic looks very natural
Traditional crowns are sometimes better for:
- Back molars that need extra strength (some labs can create stronger materials than in-office mills)
- Complex cases where a lab technician’s hand-crafting is beneficial
- Patients whose insurance doesn’t cover same-day technology yet
What About Quality?
This is the most common concern we hear. Is a same-day crown as good as a traditional one?
The answer is yes. Modern CEREC crowns are durable, natural-looking, and long-lasting. The ceramic material has improved dramatically over the years. Many patients get 10 to 15 years out of them with proper care.
The biggest difference is convenience. A same-day crown saves you a second appointment, a temporary crown, and two weeks of waiting. For many people, that’s worth everything.
What Center Valley Dental Offers
At Center Valley Dental, we offer both options. Dr. Lang and Dr. Ren use the latest CEREC technology for same-day crowns when it’s the right fit. And when a traditional crown is better for your specific tooth, we work with top dental labs to ensure beautiful, lasting results.
We don’t push one over the other. We listen to your needs, look at your tooth, and recommend what’s best for you.
