Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them. Whether it’s a sudden toothache, a chipped tooth, or an accident that damages your mouth, knowing where to go for immediate help is essential. At Center Valley Dental, we understand how urgent and stressful these situations can be. That’s why Dr. Lang and Dr. Ren offer comprehensive emergency dental care for patients of all ages, ensuring you get the care you need when you need it most.
What is a Dental Emergency?
A dental emergency is any issue involving your teeth, gums, or mouth that requires immediate attention to stop pain, prevent further damage, or save a tooth. Dental emergencies can vary from mild discomfort to severe pain and swelling. If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, it’s always better to contact us and let our team help you assess the problem.
Common dental emergencies include:
- Severe Toothache: Sudden, intense pain in your tooth could indicate an infection or other serious issues. If over-the-counter pain relievers aren’t helping and the pain persists, you should seek emergency dental care right away.
- Broken or Chipped Tooth: Accidents happen, and when they do, a broken or chipped tooth is common. Depending on the severity, the damage could expose the inner layers of your tooth, making it vulnerable to infection. We can repair the tooth and restore its appearance and function with a variety of treatments.
- Knocked-Out Tooth: A tooth that has been knocked out due to trauma requires immediate attention. If treated quickly, there’s a chance the tooth can be saved. Be sure to handle the tooth carefully by the crown and avoid touching the roots. Keep it moist and come to our office as soon as possible.
- Abscess or Infection: An abscessed tooth is an infection that forms around the root or in the gum tissue. This can cause swelling, pain, and even fever. Left untreated, an infection could spread to other areas of the mouth and body, leading to more serious health issues. Emergency dental care can help alleviate pain and treat the infection before it worsens.
- Lost Filling or Crown: If a filling or crown falls out, your tooth is left unprotected, which could lead to increased pain or further damage. Our emergency care services can replace or repair the lost restoration so you can return to your daily activities without discomfort.
What to Do in a Dental Emergency
When faced with a dental emergency, it’s important to act quickly and remain calm. If you’re experiencing a toothache, try rinsing your mouth with warm water and gently flossing to remove any debris. Over-the-counter pain medication can help manage pain.
For a knocked-out tooth, gently rinse the tooth with water (do not scrub it), and try to place it back into the socket if possible. If that’s not an option, store the tooth in milk or a tooth preservation kit and bring it with you to the dentist.
If your mouth is bleeding or swollen, use a cold compress to reduce swelling and bleeding until you can reach our office.
