What Are Dental Implants?

A dental implant is a replacement for a missing tooth root. It is placed in the jaw bone. Over a few months, the bone grows and fuses to the implant. Once the area heals, an abutment and a crown are attached to the implant. The result is the most predictable, longest-lasting replacement of a missing tooth. It is no wonder that dental implants in Center Valley are our most popular service!

The typical dental implant is made of three pieces, each serving a specific purpose for the implant as a whole:

  • Titanium Fixture: This replacement root is the first piece to be placed and is embedded below the gum line. The gums are then sutured over the site so that the fixture can take root and trigger the process of osseointegration. (You can read more about osseointegration below.)
  • Abutment: The abutment is placed over the fixture, filling in the hollow space and creating a foundation for the restoration to be placed. Depending on your treatment plan, another period of healing may be required before capping it with the restoration.
  • Restoration: The last part of the process is the crown, which Dr. Lang customizes to ensure that it mimics a real tooth in function and appearance.

Why Choose Dental Implants?

There are several reasons why dental implants are considered the best option for tooth replacement. We’ve compiled a list of some of the top benefits our patients have enjoyed most with their dental implants!

What is the Implant Process?

Discover Center Valley Dental’s Dental Implants Process!

  • First, the implant (small titanium cylinder or screw that looks like a tooth root) is surgically placed into your jawbone where you lost the tooth. Over the next three to four months, the implant and the bone are allowed to bond together to form an anchor for your artificial tooth. During this time, a temporary tooth replacement option can be worn over the implant site so you do not have a “space” where you are missing your tooth.
  • After the maturation process has been completed, the extension on top of the implant is often changed before the restorative part of the case begins. Sometimes, a second step of the procedure is necessary to uncover the implant and attach this same extension. This small metal post, called an abutment, completes the foundation on which your new tooth will be placed. Your gums will then be allowed to heal for a couple of weeks following this procedure.
  • Finally, a porcelain prosthesis will be created for you and attached to the implant and the abutment. After this has been cemented in place, you will finally experience restored confidence in your smile and your ability to chew and speak.

Are You Ready for a New Smile?

Deciding to pursue dental implants is just the first step toward a complete smile. The next is to determine whether you’re a candidate for dental implants. There’s more going on under your gums than you realize. A dental implant provider like Center Valley Dental can help identify what it takes to ensure a successful dental implant treatment.

What Makes a Good Candidate for Dental Implants?

Here’s a quick list of common traits found in dental implant candidates. Keep in mind that even if you don’t fall under all of these traits, this does not disqualify you from dental implants:

  • One or More Missing Teeth: Dental implants are best for patients who are already missing teeth or are at risk for missing teeth. Whether you lost your teeth due to disease, age, or accident, these types of patients are most eligible for the treatment.
  • Jawbone and Gum Tissue Support: Osseointegration is a vital part of the dental implant process. The jawbone provides the foundation for this process to take place. If a patient has an insufficient jawbone, then the dental implant may struggle to bond with the jawbone. The same can be said for the gum tissue. If that’s the case, you may need a bone graft or soft tissue augmentation to help replenish those areas.
  • Without Any Oral Diseases: Contagious diseases like tooth decay or gum disease can easily spread from tooth to tooth. It’s important to address these conditions prior to dental implant treatment.
  • Understanding of the Process: The dental implant process is not an instant procedure. We place each piece of the implant one at a time. This oftentimes requires periods of healing between placements. This way osseointegration can fully take root. This should give your dental implant a higher chance of success.

Even if you do not meet all these requirements, be sure to speak to Dr. Matthew Lang first about all of your dental implant options.

How to Improve Your Dental Implant Candidacy

If you have been told by another dental implant provider that you may not be a candidate for dental implants, don’t feel discouraged. There are a few ways to improve your chances for qualification by adhering to the following steps:

  • Consistent Oral Care: Remember to brush your teeth at least twice a day, as well as floss. If you find signs of cavities, gum disease, or are having trouble with your current dental devices, don’t hesitate to ask us for help.
  • Break Bad Habits: Smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, teeth grinding, and using your teeth to tear open packaging can negatively impact your tooth health. Preserve what’s left of your smile by abstaining from these bad habits.
  • Supplemental Treatments: If your jawbone has deteriorated, a supplemental treatment such as a bone graft or sinus lift could remedy this problem. These procedures ensure that your jawbone is ready and healthy enough to support your dental implants.
